Standard Table Linen Sizes

Standard Table Linen Sizes

Whether you are planning a formal event or simply want to hide a scratched tabletop, table linens are a versatile decorating tool. Table linens are manufactured in a wide variety of colors, shapes and designs. Tablecloths, napkins, placemats and table runners are available in standard sizes designed to fit most tables. Does this Spark an idea?

Tablecloths

Most tables are built in standard sizes and shapes. The same holds true for tablecloths. There are four basic shapes. Square tablecloths are available in a traditional 52-by-52-inch size. This accommodates a standard square table that seats four diners. While there are other standard sizes available, the two most common rectangular sizes are 52-by-70 inches and 60-by-84 inches. Tablecloths for oval tables, also known as racetrack tables, are available in sizes of 60-by-102 inches, 60-by-120 inches and 60-by-144 inches. Round tablecloths are available in a number of sizes, with 70-inch and 90-inch diameters being the most common. When measuring a table for a tablecloth, it is essential to consider the length of the drop. The "drop" is the amount of fabric that hangs over the edge of the table. An 8-inch drop is considered the minimum for a proper fit. A drop of 10 to 12 inches is considered normal. A floor-length drop is commonly used for formal affairs. This is 29 to 30 inches, the standard height of tables.

Napkins

A linen napkin may seem extravagant, but cloth rather than paper napkins add a touch of elegance to any affair. Napkins come in a variety of sizes depending on the occasion. Cocktail napkins are the smallest and are commonly 6 inches square. Luncheon napkins are used for formal luncheons or brunch and typically measure 18 inches square. The standard size of a dinner napkin is 22 inches square. Buffet napkins are the largest, measuring 27 inches square.

Placemats

Linen placemats are a fun alternative to tablecloths for a casual get-together. Placemats are readily available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Although there are no hard-and-fast rules, if you are unsure of the best shape to use on your table, there is a general guide. Round placemats are most appropriate for round tables. Round placemats are available in a standard 14-inch diameter. Square placemats work best on square tables and are available in a standard measurement of 13 inches square. Rectangular placemats are the perfect choice for a rectangular table and are available in dimensions of 12-by-16 inches and 13-by-19 inches. Oval-shaped placemats are most suitable for oval tables and are available in a standard size of 12-by-18 inches.

Table Runners

Also known as scarves, table runners have been used for centuries as a means to decorate a table. A table runner may be used alone or with coordinating place mats. They are frequently used with a tablecloth to add a touch of color at formal events. Table runners are traditionally placed lengthwise on a table, but may be used widthwise to disguise a leaf. Standard widths are 10 inches, 12 inches and 15 inches. Standard table runner lengths measure 54 inches, 72 inches, 90 inches, 108 inches and 120 inches.

Creative Table Setting Ideas for a Barbecue

Creative Table Setting Ideas for a Barbecue

Generally, when outdoor parties or barbecues are held, the weather is warm and pleasant, which means that party hosts can take advantage of the fresh flowers and fruits available in spring and summer to decorate their tables. Additionally, because barbecues are less formal than other occasions, hosts can experiment with several whimsical table decorations and settings, from clam shell dip containers to cowboy boot vases. As barbecues tend to be kid-friendly occasions, safe and durable table settings and ornaments should also be considered. Does this Spark an idea?

Tropical & Ocean Themes

A tropical or ocean theme is well suited to a barbecue, even if your party is nowhere near the beach. Brightly colored tropical flowers can give your table a look reminiscent of a luau, especially when set against tablecloths and runners in cool colors, such as white and teal. Large shells, such as abalone or oyster shells, may be used to hold dip, salsa or ice. Instead of using traditional napkin rings, try using raffia strung with coral or shell beads.

Chalkboard Placemats

CBS.com suggests using small chalkboards instead of traditional placemats. The advantages of using chalkboards as placemats as that they are durable and reusable, as well as adaptable to a number of other purposes. Children will enjoy drawing on them during idle moments, while adults and kids alike can use them to play games such as tic-tac-toe when the meal is over.

Candles & Lanterns

Candles and lanterns will keep your barbecue bright and vibrant, even after the sun sets. In addition, citronella candles can serve the practical purpose of repelling pesky mosquitoes. For a romantic look, votive candles may be placed on the table in bowls or jars of festive water. You can also suspend lanterns from your picnic table umbrella. If you have a large tree in your yard, place your table beneath it, and light it with lanterns or Christmas lights strung from the branches.

Lemon & Lime Place Settings

Another practical place setting idea is to use whole lemons or limes as place settings. Write guests' names on paper labels and place them on the ends of toothpicks. These small signs can then be placed in lemon or lime halves. This has the added advantage of ensuring that any guest who desires more lemon for his salmon or lime for his mojito has it conveniently on hand.

Vivid Colors

During the spring and summer, flowers are at their most brilliant and beautiful. Intensely colored flowers, such as pansies and snapdragons, can be complemented by either pale, neutral table settings or by equally intense, saturated colors. You could also try designing a monochromatic table. If you have golden marigolds on hand, complement them with yellow tablecloths, plates, napkins and napkin rings. Set flowers off in unusual containers, such as watering cans or milk jugs.

Cowboy & Farm Themes

Finally, barbecues are traditionally associated with cowboy and farm life. Use bandanna-patterned cloth as a table runner, or use bandannas as napkins. Decorate tables with sunflowers placed in cowboy boots. For a rustic touch, use hay bales as seats instead of chairs.

Homemade Elizabethan Centerpiece Ideas

Homemade Elizabethan Centerpiece Ideas

The Elizabethan era, from the middle to the end of the 16th century, celebrated the hard-fought triumph of monarchy over feudal rule and the resulting elevation of Britain to the status of a world power. The royal court was a place of abundance and material excess, although Elizabeth I attempted to regulate court morality with the same iron hand she applied to foreign and domestic political policies. Elizabeth's court boasted of the treasures acquired by trade -- spices, gold, exotic fruits and flowers. Set the tone of your own Elizabethan feast with a festive centerpiece. Does this Spark an idea?

Setting the Table

Elizabethan banquet table setting followed a system: a heavy dark-colored cloth reaching close to the floor (to keep the feet warm and hide the bones and other food trash tossed to the floor); a light-colored linen cloth (the cover for the meal -- and something to use when napkins got soiled); and a runner or smaller cloth setting the theme of the party (one of Elizabeth's cloths looked like a grassy lawn). Layered cloths are a look often used for modern dinner parties. Make the look more royal by choosing wide ribbon runners or fabric strips in rich, vivid colors with a touch (or more) of gold or silver.

Setting the Mood

The small center cloth or runners set the mood: rich, intense and vivid. Red brocade, purple velvet, anything with gold scroll work would be perfect. It's hard for colors to be too strong, because they will be seen in candlelight. Take whatever path you like -- strings of fairy lights, votives carpeting the table, or a collection of shiny, ornate candlesticks with tall tapers. Add flickering firelight if possible, for a real sense of dinner at the palace. Think glow and glitter for other accessories as well.

The Center of Attention

Just as Elizabethan meals featured what to modern guests is an incomprehensible order -- or disorder -- so did table decorations. (At a banquet, roast swan might be preceded by peaches poached in pomegranate juice and followed by stuffed mushrooms, layer cake and broiled asparagus decorated with violet blossoms.) Consider loading a tiered serving tray with parrot tulips, out-of-season grapes, lots of trailing ivy and little silver bells for guests to seize and ring as they wish. When in doubt, heap, scatter, trail or let flow, whether you are trying to add Jordan almonds, peonies, or artificial rose petals to your table. In general, a large centerpiece (two for a long narrow table) spreads out in small details across the whole table. Further, when in doubt, add it. Elizabethan England revelled in the beauties of exotic excess.

Extra Touches

One of the benefits of Elizabethan excess was a range of exotic odors. On a daily basis, Elizabethan England -- including court -- smelled of damp, sewage, manure and garbage, inside and out. Strewing herbs and native wildflowers covered household floors in an effort to combat those odors. Add little dishes of spices like cinnamon and allspice, bowls of potpourri and even tiny containers of scented lotions or colognes to your table. Make your banquet a symphony of aromas as well as fascinating sights and tastes.

How to Convert a Dresser Into a Dressing Table

How to Convert a Dresser Into a Dressing Table

A dressing table is a piece of furniture that can instantly add a touch of glamor to a space, harking back to the Hollywood era of feather boas and chaise lounges. A basic dresser can be easily converted into a dressing table with just a few basic tools and accessories, and the task can take just one afternoon to complete. With some tips and guidelines, making a dressing table out of a dresser can be simple and rewarding. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Remove the lower drawers of an old dresser, leaving only the top drawer behind. Knock out any shelving or support beams attached to the dresser that were supporting the removed drawers. Use the hammer to remove all extra parts.

    2

Smooth down the inside walls of the dresser with sandpaper. Make sure to remove any rough spots that may have been left behind after removing the drawers, continuing until a smooth surface is created.

    3

Cover the counter of the dresser with decorative scarves, layering them to create a sumptuous look.

    4

Place hat boxes in the open space created from the removed drawers. The hat boxes can be filled with hats, shoes and other accessories.

How to Make Baby Bumper Pads

How to Make Baby Bumper Pads

Bumper pads for cribs, bassinets and cradles are expensive purchases that can be avoided by sewing your own. Making baby bumper pads allows you the freedom to choose your favorite print or solid cotton fabric for easy washing and drying. Crib bumper pad instructions can be adjusted for cradles and bassinets by measuring your furniture and adjusting the width and length of the fabric rectangles according to the measurement of the bed's four sides. Make baby bumper pads with moderate sewing machine skills in about an hour.

Instructions

    1

Place one fabric rectangle with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. Put the batting rectangle on top of the fabric. Pin. Sew the batting to the rectangle using a -inch seam allowance and straight stitch along the four rectangle sides. Remove pins.

    2

Turn the rectangle/batting over so the right side of the fabric is facing up. Put the other fabric rectangle on top with the right sides of the fabric touching. Pin the right edge, top edge and left edge. Sew using a 1-inch seam allowance and straight stitch along the pinned right, top and left edge. Remove pins.

    3

Pull the fabric over the batting so the bumper pad is right-side out. Poke the inside corners with your finger to make a crisp corner.

    4

Fold the raw edges of the bottom bumper pad edge inside 1 inch. Pin. Sew using a -inch seam allowance and straight stitch to close the bumper pads. Remove pins.

    5

Thread a needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread. Fold a satin ribbon in half. Sew the fold of the ribbon to the top right corner of the bumper pad. Repeat for the bottom right corner.

    6

Measure 7 inches to the left of the first ribbon on the top edge of the bumper pads. Sew another satin ribbon on the fold. Repeat every 7 inches. Repeat for the bottom edge of the bumper pads.

    7

Place the bumper pads into the crib and tie the satin ribbons around the rungs of the crib tightly.

How to Build an Over-the-Bed Table

An over-the-bed table is a rolling table used to eat, work or read on while in bed. In some ways, the table is similar to those used in hospitals. When not in use over the bed, the table is pushed to the foot of the bed and used as a side table. It reduces mess and discomfort caused by working or eating in bed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Cut the 1-by-12 piece of wood into 2 pieces. One piece should measure 3-feet long and the other should be 4-feet long.

    2

Sand the wood and its corners to smooth it out.

    3

Measure and mark the boards 4 inches from the end and in the center of the width of the board. Place the pipe cuffs around the marks in the center. Mark the screw placement with a pencil.

    4

Drill leader holes through each mark. Place the cuffs onto the holes and secure them to the wood with nuts and bolts. Screw the joint joiners on to the pipe cuffs.

    5

Attach the wheels to the bottom of the 4-foot board. Place the wheels 4 inches from the edge and 2 inches from each side. Drill leader holes and screw the wheels in place.

    6

Paint or stain the wood table.

    7

Place epoxy glue into the cuff on the bottom piece and insert the pipe into the cuff. Screw the tighter screws on the joiner to tighten it around the pipe. Add epoxy into the top cuff and place the top piece onto the pipe. Tighten the screws on the joiner.

How to Dress Up a Card Table and Folding Chairs

How to Dress Up a Card Table and Folding Chairs

When you're in a pinch for extra seating for a dinner or a party, pull out a card table and folding chairs to accommodate your guests. On their own, a card table and folding chairs may not be the most attractive elements, but with some creativity and decorative elements, you can transform these portable pieces of furniture to tie them in with the look of the rest of your home or event. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Drape a tablecloth over the top of the card table. Choose a cloth that corresponds with the color scheme or decor of your home or event. For example, if you're throwing a tea party, consider a floral tablecloth. For added interest over a plain tablecloth, drape a sheer overlay on top of the cloth. For instance, if the tablecloth is solid blue, drape a lighter blue or a white organza overlay on top of it.

    2

Set a centerpiece in the middle of the table. Select a centerpiece that suits the event. For a traditional centerpiece that adds interest to any event, use a floral arrangement. If you're looking for something that makes a grander statement, put a little creativity into the centerpiece. For example, if you're hosting a Christmas dinner, place a wreath in the center of the table and set a glass vase filled with ornaments in the middle of it.

    3

Set the table. Place chargers or place mats at each spot and top them with dishes, or simply set the dishes around the table at each place. Set out cutlery and glassware as well. Drape a napkin on top of each of the plates.

    4

Cover folding chairs with lengths of fabric. Fabrics to consider using include organza, satin, silk or cotton. Choose fabrics in colors that match the tablecloth and your event.

    5

Secure the fabric to the chairs with decorative ribbon. Tie ribbon around the back of each chair above where the back of the chair meets the seat. Tie the ribbon in a bow, or simply knot it and allow the tails to hang down the back of the chair.

How to Draw Tables in Photoshop

For example, if you want to convert the table to an image for display online, Photoshop is one program that can help you accomplish that goal fairly quickly.

Instructions

    1

Click "File" then "New" on the Photoshop main menu. Set your desired size and resolution for your table in the dialog box. Set the color mode to CMYK if you plan to print the table and RGB if you plan to display the table online.

    2

Select the "Rectangle Tool" on the Photoshop toolbar. Draw the outer box of the table in your workspace.

    3

Click the ruler on the left hand side of your workspace and drag your mouse outward to create a guideline for your table columns. Space the columns according to your needs (usually about a half inch to an inch wide) with the guides.

    4

Select the "Line Tool" on the Photoshop toolbar. Hold down the Shift key and use the tool to draw a series of vertical lines inside of the table along the guidelines you set.

    5

Click the ruler on the top hand side of your workpace and drag them down to create row guidelines. Select the "Line Tool" again, hold down the "Shift" key and draw horizontal lines for your rows. You now have your table.

    6

Add text inside each box in your table using the "Horizontal Type Tool," located on the toolbar.

How to Decorate Nesting Tables

According to "Elle Decor" magazine, the origin of nesting tables comes from 19th-century English furniture designer Thomas Sheraton. These tables, which stow neatly underneath one another, save valuable floor space in small rooms. There are a variety of options for decorating with nesting tables, dictated by the amount of available space in your room and your personal taste. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Use two sets of nesting tables as end tables by your couch. Keep the tables nested and pull them out whenever you have guests. Place matching lamps on the largest tables and accessorize with small items around the lamps.

    2

Place nesting tables against a wall lined up in order from largest to smallest. On each table place a glass vase. You could either mix the colors up or opt for similar colors. For an interesting visual effect, use vases of three different heights. On the shortest table, place the tallest vase and on the tallest table, place the shortest vase.

    3

Transform your nesting tables into extra seating. Do this only if you have a very sturdy variety. Attach matching cushions to the top of each one.

    4

Keep your nesting tables semi-nested. Don't fully extend them from one another, but leave them sticking out enough to place small decorative objects, like a ceramic vase, antique books or whatever matches your personal taste, on them.

Ping-Pong Techniques

Ping-Pong Techniques

Ping-pong is one of the fastest sports in the world. Ping-pong strengthens the arm muscles and reflex skills and improves hand-eye coordination. An hour-long game of table tennis burns almost 300 calories. That is equivalent to a 27 minute power walk on the treadmill or 32 minutes of light gymnastics. Because of the speed and rapidity of movements in ping-pong, the heart rate is kept elevated, giving effective cardiovascular and aerobic exercise.

Basics of Ping-Pong

To master the game, command over basic moves such as the racquet grip, the ping-pong stroke and the basic serve is essential. The grip is crucial because it controls the angle of the paddle, which determines your game. The stroke refers to your treatment of the ball and the way it is hit. The serve is very important because it is the only stage of the game where you have total control of how and where you are going to place the ball. Serve should ensure that the ball bounces on either side of the table.

Ping-Pong Techniques

There are several techniques that players use in ping-pong. Knowledge of the right techniques is essential to ensure overall success of your game. The basic techniques are the drive, the push and the basic serve. Advanced techniques include the loop, the chop and advanced service.

Basic Ping-Pong Techniques

The drive is a basic offensive technique in the game to force errors on the part of the opponent. The drive is a light top spin stroke that produces an upwards and forwards movement of the ball. The push is generally a defensive shot used to respond to the opponent's very low and close shots. The push incorporates a light backspin. Properly executed, this technique enables placement of the ball anywhere on the table where it is difficult for the opponent to attack. The basic service rules require the ball to be held high enough to be visible to the opponent and the umpire. The ball must be tossed vertically at least six inches and struck only on the way down. The service must cause the ball to bounce once on either side of the table.

Advanced Ping-Pong Techniques

The loop is an advanced variation of the drive stroke. It incorporates considerable top spin on the ball, giving it a strong forward and upward motion. The loop drive is the primary attacking stroke of serious players today. The chop is a stroke favored by players using defensive techniques that attempts to negate the attacking strokes of the opponent. Hit with extreme backspin, the chop causes the ball to bounce very low and move forwards in a flat path. Advanced serve differs from the basic serve in that it has a degree of spin to it. The spin may be top spin, back spin or side spin. By varying the angle of the paddle and point of contact with the ball, a variety of advanced serve techniques can be played. The opponent is unable to anticipate your serve, thus giving advantage to your game.

Guide to Tablecloth Size

Guide to Tablecloth Size

A fitted tablecloth is a subtle expression of elegance which will enhance not only the vision of the table it covers, but also the table settings that adorn it.

Occasions for a fitted tablecloth cover many spectrums, from traditional home settings to holiday gatherings to even more professional presentations, like weddings, business presentations or exhibitions. All of these situations will benefit from the allure of a correctly fitted tablecloth. Does this Spark an idea?

The Size

    A lap drop tablecloth.

To purchase the right size tablecloth you must know the basic measurements of your table. Determine the height, length and width of the table. Include the leaves or extensions in this basic measurement. If these will be extended just for special occasions, you will need two tablecloth measurements: one with extensions, and one without.

The Overhang

    Tablecloth for a banquet.

Sizing a tablecloth also means sizing the overhang, or drop, as it is called. A minimum drop is 8 inches, while a lap size drop is between 10 and 12 inches. Banquet or wedding tables would have about a 15-inch drop while showcase or exhibition tablecloths almost always overhang to the floor. Depending on how high your table is, the final drop measurement will have to be calculated in.

Basic Size Computation

    A round tablecloth

Square, oval and oblong tablecloths use the same formula to determine tablecloth size. For width, add the drop times two, and for length, also add the drop times two.

Round tables are calculated a bit differently. For the drop, measure the diameter of the table, which is from end to end in the middle, and then add that to your preferred drop measurement, times two.

Decorating a Farmhouse Breakfast Table

Decorating a Farmhouse Breakfast Table

The farmhouse table tends to be the spot where people gather. With its worn finish and rustic charm, it lends itself to casual morning dining. If youre having a morning breakfast get-together, this friendly kitchen item is up for the task. You need only to look for accessories that you likely already have. The key difference will be in how you arrange them together. The results of this early-morning decorating adventure will be well worth it. Itll let guests know that you thought enough of them to decorate, but without going against the casual character of the farmhouse breakfast table. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Put down a country-themed table runner. Many farmhouse tables have a well-worn look. This adds to the charm. A table runner will give the table a splash of color without completely covering the table. Look for runners made from antique linen, gingham or calico.

    2

Place a small, multi-tiered metal plant stand in the middle of the table. A three-tiered stand is ideal. Look for one that features a country motif like chickens. This will give you more room on the table and provide one of the key decorative elements of this arrangement.

    3

Gather a set of antique blue granite dishes, including the coffee service.

    4

Put together a country floral arrangement. Use flowers from your garden and wildflowers from the area. Arrange the flowers in an antique crock. Place the flower arrangement on the top tier of your stand.

    5

Put a hot pad down on the middle tier of the stand. Save this spot for the coffee pot. Granite coffee pots come off the stove hot, so wrap some linen napkins around the handle so that you and your guests can lift it.

    6

Fill a wire egg basket with linen napkins. Select napkins with a country-style motif like gingham or that feature hand-embroidered flowers. Set the egg basket on the bottom tier of the plant stand. This provides guests with extra napkins.

    7

Lay down country-style place mats. Possible options might be thatched mats as well as cloth ones with calico or gingham patterns. Put the granite plates on the place mats.

    8

Make breakfast part of the decor. Bake mini loaves of bread. Place a miniature plate easel in front of each place mat. Put a small bread plate on it from your granite ware collection. Put a mini loaf in front of the plate and place ramekins of whipped butter beside them.

    9

Fill a ceramic chicken cookie jar or bowl with hard-boiled eggs. You can pass these around at breakfast time.

    10

Make a breakfast pie filled with eggs, farm veggies and meats. Place a cute pie bird on top for an extra country touch.

How to Get a Good Drop in the Falador Drop Party Room on "RuneScape"

Falador drop parties are lucrative opportunities for "Runescape" players to find incredibly valuable goods and piles of gp, the game currency. These drop parties attract an enormous amount of players, all with the hopes of striking it rich. While the competition may be fierce, there are techniques and habits that can be implemented to improve one's odds of coming out with a good drop.

Instructions

    1

Log onto World 102 if you are a free-to-play member, and either World 102 or World 103 if you are a pay-to-play subscriber. Drop parties are held only in these two Worlds. Drops in the pay-to-play world will be generally more valuable because people are bound to drop expensive pay-to-play only items.

    2

Go to the Falador bank and be on the lookout for announcements. The bankers will broadcast when a drop party will occur and how valuable each drop party will be.

    3

Pick and choose the drop parties that you want to attend. There most likely will not be any good drops for parties worth less than 50,000 gp, but you'll want to attend parties worth one million or more gp. The time for every drop party will be announced, and you will have ample time to get to the Drop Party Room, located at the northeastern corner of Falador.

    4

Stay in one spot and wait for the balloons to appear. Try not to move around too much, as balloons will pop up everywhere. There is almost no way you will be able to run to a balloon and pop it because there is bound to be someone standing right next to it. Just stay where you are, keep your run setting on, and pop as many balloons as you can. Statistically speaking, the more balloons you pop, the more of a chance you will find a valuable item.

For example, Government Technology reports that over half of all workers 16 and older used a computer on the job. However, like all machines, computers are subject to wear and tear and get outdated. The high demand for computers, coupled with the need for updates and repair, means that computer workshops are necessary. Such workshops must be set up properly in order to prevent injury to technicians and to be efficient.

Instructions

    1

Consider how much computer work your workshop will need to accommodate. This will influence the space you need in the workshop. For example, if you plan to work on just one computer at a time, your workshop may be smaller than if you will need to set up a dozen computers.

    2

Look for a workshop area that accommodates the volume of repair you intend to do. As explained by Technibble, your workshop area should be well-lit, well-ventilated and have proper heat and humidity control. The workshop also should be fairly easy to keep clean, as dust and debris can ruin computer hardware.

    3

Research vendors that can supply you with the tools you will need for the workshop. Essential tools include screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, grounding straps, compressed air, pliers, surge protectors, Ethernet and USB cable and a rubber mallet. You also may need software discs and extra computer parts. These may be purchased on an as-needed basis. Find a vendor with a good customer-service record.

    4

Purchase your tools from the vendors.

    5

Go to your local hardware or home improvement store and purchase furniture for the workshop such as long tables, shelves and storage cabinets. The storage cabinets should have compartments small enough for small items like computer screws. Furniture should keep all computer parts off of the floor to avoid moisture damage and accidental breakage.

    6

Set up the furniture in the shop in such a way that it accommodates the electrical outlets. Do not tuck cords behind the furniture, and don't overload the outlets. Make sure the setup makes the majority of repairs physically easy. For example, the cabinet you use for storing your tools should be next to your main repair table, not across the entire workshop.

    7

Check that your furniture is not going to cause injury. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides specific guidelines on how to set up computer workstations in the most ergonomic way. The furniture should be fitted to the user and provide support for the entire body, especially the back. Avoid severe angles.

    8

Put all of your supplies in the proper storage area. Label cabinets.

Pub Decor Ideas

Pub Decor Ideas

A successful pub creates friendly, comfortable ambiance and an atmosphere of security within its walls. Make the space more inviting with charming decor that makes the bar a homey hangout for games, conversation and camaraderie. Utilize local flavor in the decor with photos of local celebrities, famous landmarks and items that illustrate local culture. A sports motif featuring a specific sport, such as hockey, or a city's professional, minor league and school teams, creates a tie to the community. Does this Spark an idea?

Theme

Fishing, hunting, retro or rock-n-roll --- developing a theme makes decorating simpler and can engage patrons who may want to contribute their own knickknacks or memorabilia. A pub in a rural area may find greater appeal in a hunting lodge theme, while city-based bars can establish a more urban feel. Or juxtapose the concrete jungle with a relaxed lodge theme to bring a bit of rural life into the city.

Local

Inject local flavor into the ambiance with images of landmarks, celebrities and quintessential culture. A New Orleans pub, for example, may highlight jazz music and Louis Armstrong or riverboats and Mardi Gras. A pub in Milwaukee can focus on the city's renowned breweries and rich brewing history by featuring antique logos and microbrewery tools.

Family

Honor your genealogy through decorations featuring your heritage and culture. For pubs that have been handed down across generations, pictures showing the evolution of the pub enrich the history and experience. Include photos of the original owners through to the current generation, particularly with parts of the pub that have changed --- stained glass windows, a new mahogany bar or a fresh awning and sign.

Sports

Celebrate local teams from the high school to professional levels by featuring memorabilia like jerseys, pom poms, helmets, baseballs, hockey sticks, trophies and team photos. Framed newspaper clippings of notable athletes and playoff victories coupled with photographs of coaches and stadiums round out the decor, as do materials from playoff games such as programs and VIP passes.

How to Create a Perfect Salad Bar for a Party

How to Create a Perfect Salad Bar for a Party

If you plan to throw a party, try creating a salad bar to impress your guests. Salad bars allow people to prepare salads that suit their tastes, which make them a popular choice for get-togethers. Similar to the style of a buffet, salad bars will need setup according to how they are prepared. You will essentially need to place the utensils and dinnerware at the beginning of the salad bar before you lay everything out in order. It is important to include a variety of options for your guests. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Choose a location to create the salad bar. You can use a kitchen bar, a long kitchen table or consider placing several tables together and draping them with the same tablecloth.

    2

Decorate the salad bar. Add items that will accent your party. Try adding centerpieces between salad bar containers, decorate the table with streamers or place flower arrangements on the ends of the salad bar. If decorated well, the appearance of the salad bar will attract your guests.

    3

Set out large metal bowls filled with ice. You will need a way to keep the food cold. Each container of lettuce, vegetables, fruit, cheese and dressing will need an ice container. This will prevent the food from wilting and it will preserve the food to last for several hours without spoiling.

    4

Shred lettuce for the beginning of your salad bar. Common lettuce used in salads include iceberg lettuce, romaine and spinach. Place the lettuce in a large bowl, but do not set too much out at one time. Leave the lettuce in the refrigerator until it's time to eat to prevent it from wilting.

    5

Lay out a variety of vegetables. Prepare your vegetables the night before to save yourself time. Include tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, mushrooms, peppers and radishes. You will need to choose at least 5 different vegetables.

    6

Place the fruit after your vegetables. Try mixing up the fruit variety by adding different colors and textures. Fruits such as pineapples, grapes, raisins and strawberries will add color to your salad bar. You can add all of the fruit into one bowl to save space at your salad bar.

    7

Add the salad embellishments at the end of your salad bar. People like to top their salads with nuts, seeds, cheese and crackers. Place these items in smaller containers off to the side. Do not forget to add dry seasonings such as salt, pepper and Parmesan with your embellishments.

    8

Place the dressings at the end of your salad bar. Instead of placing bottle of dressings out, try pouring the dressing into bowls with ladles. This will allow people to pour the dressing over their salads easily, and it makes the salad bar more presentable. You will also need a variety of dressings available, such as fat-free dressings, oil and vinegar and flavor-rich dressings.

How to Make a Tablecloth for a Round End Table

How to Make a Tablecloth for a Round End Table

Measure, mark, cut and stitch your choice of fabric to transform it into a beautiful cover for a small round accent table. Choose a theme for the tablecloth such as the Christmas holidays, an elegant dinner party or a childs birthday celebration. The same technique applies in making any round tablecloth that can be used over and over again.

Instructions

    1

Use the measuring tape to measure the diameter of the top of the end table. Also measure from the top edge of the table to the floor.

    2

Calculate the diameter of the tablecloth to be sewn. Measure the end table diameter and add the measurement of the tabletop edge to the floor two times plus 4 inches for the seam. If your round end table has a top diameter of 18 inches and the measurement from the edge of the table to the floor is 30 inches, the total diameter for the tablecloth you need to sew is 18 inches, plus 30 inches, plus 30 inches, plus 4 inches. This equals a diameter of 82 inches.

    3

Purchase fabric at a fabric store for at least 82 inches long (in this example, 2.27 yards). Since the diameter for your round tablecloth is 82 inches, you will have to purchase 4.6 yards off the same bolt of fabric because the bolt width is less than the 82 inches you will need.

    4

Fold the length of the fabric in half widthwise and cut with scissors to make two equal pieces.

    5

Align the two pieces of fabric lengthwise (2.27 yards using the end table example in Step 1) right side in. Straight stitch a seam along the edge 1/2-inch. Open and iron the seam with a hot iron.

    6

Fold the fabric lengthwise and then widthwise to create four layers of a triangle. Use straight pins to pin the edges to keep from falling out of alignment.

    7

Hold the measuring tape at the top point of the triangle and measure down one side 41 inches, the radius of your round tablecloth (the point from the center of a circle to the edge). Mark it with a straight pin. Measure 41 inches down along the other edge of the triangle and mark it also with a straight pin. Holding the measuring tape at the top point, insert straight pins 41 inches from one side of the triangle to the other 2 inches apart.

    8

Use scissors to cut the fabric along the straight pin markers, removing the pins as you cut.

    9

Sew a 1/2-inch wide seam along the edge of the round tablecloth with the sewing machine in straight stitch, folding in 1/2-inch twice for a neat finish. Iron the seam and the entire tablecloth.

How to Make Organic Wool Mattress Pads

If you want to take advantage of the benefits of organic wool mattress pads, but you don't have the budget to purchase one ready-made, you can make your own. Among their many benefits, wool mattress pads repel allergy-causing dust mites; the mites cannot live in lanolin-rich wool. Wool is highly absorbent, a quality that helps you remain dry and cool during the summer months and warm during the winter months. In addition to these benefits, wool's resilient nature provides excellent lumbar support, as it evenly distributes weight across its surface.

Instructions

    1

Measure the length and width of your mattress to determine your mattress pad's finished size.

    2

Cut the mattress pad cover from organic cotton fabric. You will need to cut a back piece and a front piece equal to your mattress pad's finished size, plus an additional 5 inches in length and width to account for your seam allowance. If you cannot cut a large enough back and front from a single length of fabric, piece smaller sections together, then pin the pieces together and sew them together with a straight stitch using organic thread. Use your sewing machine to expedite this step and leave a 1/2-inch seam. Iron the seam flat before proceeding.

    3

Piece together organic wool batting to create a pad that measures your finished mattress pad's width and length. Use a whip stitch to baste the strips of batting together.

    4

Sandwich the batting between the cotton front and back. Place the back piece wrong side up on an even surface and smooth. Place the batting directly on top of the pad backing and position the pad front on top, right side facing up.

    5

Baste the layers together to prevent them from shifting when you tie the wool batting into place. Sew long running stitches once every few inches and baste from the center out. Stitch diagonal lines from the center to each corner of your mattress pad, then stitch straight lines from the center to the pad edge.

    6

Tie the mattress pad. Use organic wool yarn to anchor the batting in place. Thread your needle and sew the yarn down through the layers and back up. Remove the needle and tie the loose yarn ends in a square knot. Create a tie every 4 inches to ensure your organic wool batting doesn't bunch inside its cover.

    7

Remove the basted stitches when you've tied all the layers together.

    8

Fold under the raw edges of the pad's front and back until their edges extend 1/4 inch beyond the wool batting. Pin the folded edges together and use a straight stitch to sew them shut. Use your sewing machine for this step to expedite the process.

How to Make a Ping Pong Paddle

How to Make a Ping Pong Paddle

Ping Pong or Table Tennis is one of the only sports that is played by both Olympians and people on a 15 minute break in their office rec room. Creating your own paddle is an excellent way to show your originality and further invest yourself in the sport without too much expense.

Instructions

    1

Draw out the pattern of the paddle on the sheet of plywood. Draw out a square that is 5 by 5 inches and attach a rectangle to the middle bottom of this square that is 5 inches long and 2 inches wide. Draw the paddle shape with an oval inside the rectangle that is squatter at the bottom and slightly elongated at the top. Draw the handle with two curved lines on the right and left side of the panel. Draw a curved line at the bottom of the rectangle for the end of the handle.

    2

Cut the paddle out of the plywood with a jigsaw. Sand the edges of the paddle slightly with a piece of 100 grit sand paper to remove any splinters.

    3

Cut out the handles from the small board of cherry wood. Lay down the cut out paddle pattern and place this over the board. Trace around the handle. Move the handle to the side and trace it again. Add an upside down "V" shape for the top of the handle. Cut these pieces out with a jigsaw. Sand the edges with 100 grit sand paper.

    4

Place a line of wood glue along the inside edge of each handle. Add a "zig-zag" line of glue running up and down the inside of the handle as well. Place the handles so that they sandwich the handle of the plywood paddle. Clamp these together with two wood clamps. Use a damp paper towel to wipe away any glue that squeezes out. Leave this in the clamps overnight to dry.

    5

Wrap a thick rubber band around the handle of the paddle and begin sanding the paddle smooth and round so that it fits your hand. Start with 100 grit sand paper and move through the different grades until 1000 grit. Sand the paddle starting with 500 grit and then 1000 grit.

    6

Stain the paddle with wood stain in the color of your choice. Brush it on with a rag or sponge. Let the stain dry overnight and apply a matte finish to the paddle.

Light Weight Small Folding Tables

Light Weight Small Folding Tables

Small, lightweight folding tables are handy items that have many uses. You can put folding tables to use in numerous ways, from dining in front of the TV to working on your laptop to cleaning fish while camping. They come in many sizes and materials to suit your needs and decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Types of Small Folding Tables

From fancy and decorative to plain and purely functional, there is a wide variety of small, lightweight folding tables available for sale. Wood, wicker and wrought iron styles are generally more attractive than many other materials, but tend to have a higher price tag. Resin- or plastic-top tables with steel legs look quite plain but are durable workhorses. Many small, lightweight folding tables are made for a specific activity, such as dining, camping or crafts. Small, multi-purpose tables are a smart buy, as they are slightly larger than TV tables and allow you to adjust their height to suit your activity.

Temporary Uses

Because small folding tables are so lightweight and simple to use, you can get them out on a whim and put them back out of sight as soon as you're ready. Use TV tables and let the whole gang eat in the family room on family movie night. Or, set out one for yourself if you'd like to get a little work done on your laptop while watching your favorite show. Bring folding tables out during parties for extra serving room, or put them to work holding an in-progress puzzle, craft, sewing or knitting project.

Permanent Uses

Although these types of tables are designed to be portable and quickly put up and taken down, you might find them sturdy and attractive enough to use as permanent pieces of furniture. Depending up their size and height, small, lightweight folding tables can be put to good use as end tales, bedside tables or plant stands. Group three or four together in place of a coffee table. Anything small that you'd like to keep off the floor can be placed on a folding table, such as a hamster cage, framed photos or a stack of books.

Outdoor Uses

You can put your small folding tables to work outside as well as inside. Place one between two patio chairs or pool loungers for a handy spot to set drinks, or place several of varying heights together for a multi-tiered plant stand. Use them for display space at your next garage sale, or if your kids set up a lemonade stand, let them use a folding table for serving lemonade, holding cups and counting cash. Take your folding tables camping and they'll come in handy for cooking, dining, cleaning fish and playing cards.

Dangers of Leaving a Child Unattended on a Dressing Table

Never leave a baby unattended on a changing table: This is one of the first rules of parenting. Everyone hears the rule over and over, but it is essential that a new mom or dad stop and think about all the reasons they need to pay close attention to their babies when they're on the changing table--the dangers go well beyond falling.

Falling

The first time a baby rolls over is almost always a surprise to her parents. If she rolls over while unattended on a changing table, she could fall and be seriously injured.

Choking

Nail clippers, cotton swabs, caps from diaper-rash creams and other choking hazards can collect on changing tables. An unattended baby could grab one of these items and choke.

Poison

An unattended baby on a changing table could easily reach for a tube of diaper-rash cream or a baby lotion and try to eat it. This could make her sick.

Hurt by strap

Strapping a baby onto the changing table does not ensure his safety. Even a small baby could wiggle around and be strangled by the strap.

Falling items

Many changing tables are designed with a higher ledge for storing such items as wipes and diapers. Sometimes parents also display knickknacks on this shelf. A wiggly baby could shake the table enough to cause an item to fall and harm him.

Table Tennis Games for Physical Education

Table Tennis Games for Physical Education

Table tennis, or ping-pong, teaches Physical Education students about hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, position play and social interaction. Before introducing table tennis games, Physical Education teachers should ensure there are enough tables to allow a substantial number of students to play at one time.

Knockout

This version of table tennis may be played as doubles or singles and is great for classes that have a large number of students in comparison to tables. Divide the class into teams. Begin as a normal game of table tennis; however, when one player misses or hits the ball in a way that allows the other player to score, he is out, the next player on his team steps in and so forth.

Hanetsuki

This Japanese version of table tennis categorizes each table into its own team of six to eight players. The object of the game is to keep the ball in play longer than the other competing tables of teams. The Physical Education teacher eliminates tables as their ball goes out of game play. The table who keeps their ball in play the longest wins. The teacher may require assistance, depending on the number of table teams.

How to Sew a Dressing Table Skirt That Fits a Swing Arm

Making a skirt for your vanity table will take a little time, careful measuring and attention to detail when attaching it. By using a hook-and-loop fastener, you'll be able to remove it for laundering or to change it for a completely new look.

Instructions

Making the Skirt

    1

Measure the dressing table all the way around the outside edge on the top and add three inches for seams and side hems. This will be the width measurement. If you're making a gathered table skirt, double the width measurement.

Measure the distance from the table top to the floor and add four inches for top and bottom hems. This will be the length measurement.

    2

Cut the fabric according to the width and length measurements. Unless you're using extra-wide fabric, you'll probably be working with two pieces of fabric, which you'll seam together.

    3

Sew the two fabric pieces together along the length using a 1/2-inch seam. On the two remaining short edges, which will be the front of the skirt, turn under 1/2 inch, then turn under 1/2 inch again and sew. To sew the top and bottom hems, turn under 1/2 inch, then turn under 1 1/2 inches and sew.

    4

If you're making a gathered skirt, sew a line of very long basting stitches along the top hem, leaving long tails of thread at the beginning and the end. Pull the tails of the thread to gather the fabric.

    5

Put the skirt on the table with the opening in the front and adjust the gathers to fit, allowing for a one-inch overlap on the front edges. If necessary, loosely staple the fabric to the table in a few places to hold it while you adjust the skirt. Pin the skirt at two-inch intervals to hold the gathers. Remove the skirt and any staples from the table and sew the gathers in place over the hem seam.

Attaching the Skirt

    6

Attach sticky-back hook-and-loop fastener all the way around the top edge of the table, except in the area of the swing arms. Attach the fastener to the swing arms themselves, but only up to the point where the arms are attached to the table with bolts or screws.

    7

Attach the other portion of the hook-and-loop fastener to the top of the skirt, over the gathering seam.

    8

Starting at the front, with the open edge even with the end of a closed swing arm, press the fabric onto the swing arm. Leave the fabric unfastened at the end of the swing arm where it's attached to the table. This will allow the swing arm to move freely. Work around the table, connecting the fastener, and finish with the second swing arm, again leaving the fabric unfastened where the arm attaches to the table.

How to Care for Banana Rush Chairs

Manufacturers weave banana leaves and rush grass to create chair seats, backs, chests and head- and footboards, along with many other types of furniture. Banana rush chairs offer an eco-friendly seating option in the home. Bits of dust and dirt can gouge the surface and weaken the banana rush, making removal important. Dry conditions may cause the banana rush to dry out and crack, damaging the chairs. Regular care and cleaning of banana rush chairs helps extend the life of these pieces. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Attach a soft-bristle upholstery brush to a vacuum hose. Vacuum dust and dirt off the banana rush backs, seats and arms. Turn the chair over and vacuum it from the underside.

    2

Pick out dirt carefully with a wood skewer or sharpened dowel from the area where the chair back meets the seat and arms. Brush dirt away with a paintbrush.

    3

Wet a natural sea sponge with clear water and squeeze out the sponge so it remains damp. Wipe the banana rush chair's seat, back and arms to remove stuck-on bits of dirt. Turn the chair over and wipe the underside.

    4

Spray the banana rush chair seat, arms and back with plain water from a spray bottle to prevent the materials from drying out and cracking. Spray enough water to dampen the banana rush without saturating it. Repeat this procedure every four to eight weeks, depending on the humidity in the house.

    5

Place banana rush chairs in an area of the room that is out of the direct sunlight. Sunlight is damaging to banana rush and causes it to fade and dry out. Keep banana rush seats at least 24 inches from radiators and baseboard heating.

    6

Dip the corner of a rag into paste furniture wax and apply a very thin coat over the entire banana rush chair. Follow the weave to prevent a waxy buildup in the chair's crevices.

    7

Set a banana rush chair on a tarp outdoors. Mix 1 cup of turpentine with 2 cups of boiled linseed oil. Dip a rag into the mixture and wipe it onto a banana rush chair that is overly dry or beginning to crack. Continue to wipe the boiled linseed oil and turpentine onto all surfaces of the chair until the banana leaf and rush no longer accepts the mixture. Let the chair sit for one to two hours. Wipe the excess mixture off the chair with a soft, clean rag.

How to Build Night Stands Attached to a Wall

How to Build Night Stands Attached to a Wall

Constructing nightstands as permanent fixtures allows them to pull double duty as art for your bedroom. By adorning the shelving of your nightstands with decorative materials, you can create a conversation piece that is both stylish and functional. The idea of fold down tables is appealing to those who live in cramped spaces. However, for those who live in spacious homes but lack the handyman skills required to build elaborate pieces of furniture, these two open-shelf nightstands are an optimum solution. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Cut two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood 26 inches long and 15 inches deep with a skill saw. Cut four more pieces of wood into 26-by-6-inch-wide sections.

    2

Sand the wood. Stain each piece with a water-based stain for quick drying. Choose a color that enriches the surrounding decor. Allow the first coat of stain to dry for at least two hours before applying the second coat. Let the second coat dry for four hours before applying a layer of varnish with a clean paintbrush. Allow the varnish to dry overnight before you work further with the wood.

    3

Center 6-inch tin backsplash tiles on top of each section of wood. Mark the placement of the tiles lightly in pencil. Apply construction adhesive to the wood and press the tiles in place firmly. Put each finished piece aside for one hour while the adhesive sets.

    4

Screw locking drop leaf supports along the bottom edge of each piece of wood that will attach to the wall with 1/2-inch screws. The drop leaf supports differ from traditional drop leaf hinges in that they lock in place.

    5

Mark the placement of each section of your nightstand shelves on the wall in pencil. The smaller boards, two placed on each side of the bed, will act as your lower nightstand shelves. Place the first marking 7 inches from the floor on either side of your bed. Mark the second one 13 inches from the floor. Place the final mark 29 inches from the floor. When the shelves are folded down, there will be 1/4 inch of space between each shelf and 1/4 inch between the bottom shelf and the floor.

    6

Screw the supports into the wall using 1 1/2-inch screws. The lower shelves can be used to hold small non-essentials, while the top shelves are available to hold your alarm clock, wallet and reading lamp. When not in use, the nightstands fold down, posing as artwork for your room with the tin overlay and shiny varnish.

How to Decorate a Formal Christmas Table

Put on the glitz at Christmas with a formal dinner table. Here are some tips for doing it up in style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Dress the table with an elegant solid-color cloth, made out of an elegant material such as damask.

    2

Layer a piece of metallic fabric, such as silver lam, over the main tablecloth. You can scrunch it up around the centerpiece and tuck under the cut edges, or hem the ends and let it lie flat.

    3

Enhance the linens with two lengths of tassel-tipped satin cord (one on either side of the centerpiece) that hang over the edges of the table. The cord can be a contrasting color such as red - the perfect foil for a silver runner and white tablecloth.

    4

Purchase a glittery centerpiece or make your own. One easy version is to heap various sizes of glass ornaments, perhaps silver in keeping with the table runner, in a large crystal bowl and mix in some garland glass beads or faux rubies and emeralds.

    5

Add white candles. You can use traditional tapers in silver candlesticks or nestle crystal votive candleholders into the scrunched fabric.

    6

Set the table with your best china and crystal.

    7

Place elegant metallic napkin rings (silver if that's your signature color) around the napkins that match your tablecloth, or fanfold the starched napkins and perch them in a glass at each place.

    8

Use dressy place card holders. An alternative is to use a metallic paint pen to embellish the edges of plain cards with squiggles, and then set each place card above the plate on the table.
