Design Ideas for Pool Rooms & Bars

Design Ideas for Pool Rooms & Bars

Pool rooms and bars are known for clouds of smoke and neon signs. If your family, friends or clientele like that atmosphere, by all means start shopping yard sales and catalogs for flashing adult beverage signs. If something else is in order, try a laid-back Polynesian tiki bar, give a nod to the cool James Dean-attitude of the 1950s, or spotlight the video games and movies of the 1980s. Does this Spark an idea?

1950s Theme

Skip the jukebox and checkered floor. Think pin-up girl posters, James Dean and period motorcycles. Paint the walls crimson red. Add a black tile floor and glass-domed lighting. Place real or faux black leather chairs throughout the space to provide comfort and encourage guests to linger. Display a retro scooter or vintage motorcycle. Frame and hang large posters of 1950s icons including Dean and Audrey Hepburn. Stick with black and white posters for consistency.

Hawaiian Theme

Flameless tiki torch-style sconces provide relaxing lighting, while a waterfall-type wall adds another tranquil vibe. Install tall tiki god idol statues, making sure to secure them so that they can't be toppled. If the bar or pool room is a commercial space, section off an area and add sand for mingling and sand castle contest. Add lounge chairs and beach balls.

80s Retro

Install video game machines such as "Pac Man" and "Asteroids." Show 80s-era television shows and play hit songs from the period. Hang posters from popular 1980s movies such as "The Breakfast Club," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," or "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Stack board games and logic cubes near the bar to encourage guests to socialize.
