How to Design Pingpong Paddles

A good pingpong paddle is relatively simple to create. All it takes is some plywood, a really good wood adhesive and some modern hobbyist tools. It's notable that a pingpong paddle can actually be any size. The only stipulation is that it must be composed of 85 percent wood.

Instructions

Making a Pingpong Paddle

    1

Cut the plywood sheeting down to squares that are approximate to the desired size of the paddle. Make sure you take into account the handle of the paddle, as well as the face.

    2

Apply your pattern to the square of plywood and trace it with a pencil. If you are using a paper pattern, make sure you tape it down so it doesn't move during the tracing.

    3

Cut the plywood square with your jigsaw. You should try to stick relatively close to the lines you've made with your pattern.

    4

Cut two additional handle pieces for your paddle and glue them to the paddle handle that exists from the original cut. Make sure that the glue has time to set (about two hours for most wood adhesives) before you move on to the detailed work of smoothing the paddle's edges and beveling the handle.

    5

Sand the edges of the paddle and smooth the handles with your palm sander. Once again, you can use sandpaper, but be prepared to spend some time doing it. For the handles, you're going to want to sand until it feels extremely comfortable in your hand.

    6

Using your brush, cover the paddle with polyurethane and allow it a couple hours to dry. Then, cut and affix the rubber to your paddle using the glue. You can get pingpong paddle rubber and glue online or at many sporting goods stores. Some hobbyist shops should sell it as well.
